I really did enjoy the movie Love and Basketball; I thought it was a solid romance story about true love and the reality of following your childhood dreams. The chemistry between the two main leads Quincy and Monica. You can tell throughout the movie they have this love for each other that will never go away even if they aren’t together, they still only truly love each other. I also liked the relationship between Quincy and his father. The realistic issues it portrays with famous people especially athletes and issues with cheating and how it effects their families. I liked how he looked up to his father and his dream was to be just like him. Quincy saw his father as a hero and the perfect man, he emulated him as much as could until he found out he was cheating on his mother. I loved that his world came crashing down and he realized his dream wasn’t basketball, but to appease his father which was something he no longer he wanted to do. It's something every young athlete can relate to when they realize playing a sport is not their life. I didn’t like how halfway through his father just left though and didn’t become an integral aspect of the story. Also, I wish that Quincy’s fiancée played by Tyra Banks was more developed, I feel like there were scenes cut out that could’ve given her more of a character and made her a more interesting character.
Sufficient response, but I wish you would relate it to the big picture of African American cinema, or perhaps female directors in this case.
