Super Mario Kart- AJ Schwabe
The chapter begins by explaining the origins and release date of Super Mario Kart by stating it was a racing game made by Super Nintendo and first released in 1992 but went on to rerelease each time becoming more complex than the last. In the game there are mystery boxes that give certain powerups to the racer being better the farther behind in the race you are. Green goes on to say that Mario Kart is unlike the real world because in the game people are helped when they are behind where in the real world the ones who are ahead in life usually get more perks than the ones struggling. He claims that while the perks in the real world don’t guarantee success, they help more than no perks at all and if we go about life acting like these perks are due to skill then we will only further hoard our wealth and opportunity. I believe Green wrote about this topic to inform us that despite our hardships we have many unchecked privileges that allow us to do incredible things. This helps Green define a life of significance by showing us the importance of perspective and how if we want equal opportunities for everyone, we must first understand that not everyone has started with the same conveniences as us. I am a person with very many privileges to be fortunate for. I am a straight white male so it is safe to say I am not in the minority. After reading this chapter I have a greater appreciation for the things I have been given in life and despite my hard work understand that most of this wouldn’t be possible without the help I was given at birth. I give Super Mario Kart five stars.
