Boyz In the Hood

An issue I would like to discuss is how Tre’s dad Mr. Styles mentioned that people in the hood should only have African American people owning their neighborhoods. This would include families with low incomes. I would like to relate this to how society works now. In the present day, most family homes that are run down are now being bought up, fixed, and then the houses are being sold at expensive prices. This in return will prevent families with low incomes from coming in, which will possibly also get rid of the hoods of today. His dad further expressed they were the ones who were killing themselves. And there was a scene where Doughboy and his friend got arrested for stealing. There was an article titled talking about how “Black people 5 times more likely to be arrested than whites”. I would like to relate how Mr. Styles was referencing selling that rock or dope. Some arrests have to do with illegal activity. And Mr. Styles response to that is, our young people need to start thinking about their futures which is a great response to this. This is sad how many African Americans do indeed waste their lives in this day and age. I happen to know of some African American friends that were arrested due to illegal activity. But to be fair there are indeed many who have successful lives, such as the actors who we see on screen and many others besides acting. And there are those who are at least trying to do something positive with themselves.

Good points here, but I'm not clear on what your opinion is about the film. Are you commending Singleton for addressing these things in the dialogue? The actors you are referring to are probably exceptions to the rule, meaning they are uber-wealthy, so the regular rules of society don't apply to them.
