This was my third time watching the film “Get Out” and it gets better everytime I re-watch it. With thriller films being my favorite type of genre, Jordan Peele has added a new modern way of writing and directing these new age thrillers like Us (2019) and his newest film Nope (2022) that make them way more appealing whether it’s lighting in certain situations or the long drawn out close up shots of suspense, or the sound design in specific plot points, it all just clicks. I’ve noticed plenty of symbolism in this film but the one thing that I can’t stop thinking about even a week after re-watching this film, is the symbolism of the character chris picking the cotton out of the chair he’s sitting in to then save himself from the hypnosis of the antagonist family. The symbolism of picking cotton during slave times is inverted to his escape from being enslaved by this family is so neat and well done. I’m also a fan of foreshadowing in film especially thrillers, so the scene where Chris and Rose are driving to her parents estate and out of nowhere a deer runs into their car symbolizes helplessness as he watches something unexpectedly die and can’t help but to just sit there and watch, and when they get to Rose’s parents estate her father starts bashing the deers saying they “are taking over everywhere” and “need to be killed” symbolizing his racism in a subtle way.
Nice observations. Glad you can still gain new insights after multiple watches.
