Three farmers on their way to a dance

In this chapter Green talks about and reviews a portrait taken by August Sander of three men titled Three Farmers. He investigates the picture deeply, wanting to know more about the men in the photograph, he found out that heir names were Otto Krieger, August Klein, and Ewald Klein. Otto And August were iron miners and had known each other for a long time before the photo was taken. Ewald was August’s cousin and he worked in the same iron mine’s office as he didn’t like to get his hands dirty. He uses all of this to make a comparison to how much life can change and how history can be shaped by time and be captured in these small frames to show this change. This really hit deep with me as this is something I have thought about and struggled with before. History when being looked back on changes depending on how far into the future you are looking back on it from, making it impossible to hold on to in the same way each time. I like the quote from the book “all history is current” meaning it can change from the context of the time it was preserved into something new based on the present. This really makes me think about all the times I look at old photographs of myself hanging on the walls of my home and how their meaning has changed for me and the other people that see them. For example, my senior portraits taken hardly even two years ago seem so odd to me looking at them now as I think to myself, “if he only knew the things that would happen”, but at the time I was just excited to be getting out of high school, not even thinking about anything except getting out. Its nice to read the work of someone who I feel I can relate to on something I have also thought about. Green gave three farmers on their way to a dance four and a half stars, I give it 5 stars.

Very nice write-up. I like that you get inside your own head and reveal just a little bit about yourself. Well done.
