Piggly Wiggly
John Green is providing a review of Piggly Wiggly. This is a Grocery store chain that has stores throughout the United States. The store was first founded in 1916 in Memphis, TN by, Clarence Saunders. A self-service grocery store that started a revolution in the industry all around the world.
I think Green writes about this topic to explain that even though Piggly Wiggly is just a grocery store it created a big change in the industry at the time. He was able to see what the people were moving to and wanted and create a solution. The solution he created then became very popular with thousands of stores throughout the United States at its peak. With stores still around the United States today.
I think don’t think this topic helps Green to find a life of significance because he spends most of the chapter telling the history/story of Piggly Wiggly. He mentions some of the problems that affected Americans’ diets when the self-service store was introduced. Also, how the Piggly Wiggly took over small towns and how Walmart will do the same to Piggly Wiggly.
As someone that has a Piggly Wiggly in their neighborhood, this chapter really caught my attention. I have always gone to that grocery store as a child. I like the history Green mentions about Piggly Wiggly throughout the chapter about how the store was founded and how it grew. I like how he talks about him founding another type of grocery store type that also became popular. I wish he would have talked some more about Piggly Wiggly that wasn’t just about the history of the company. I like the newspaper articles he quoted in the review about how proud Saunders was of what he created. I give this chapter a 3-star review.
