Diet Dr. Pepper

John Green is providing a review of Diet Dr. Pepper. Dr. Pepper is a popular soda beverage company. In 1885 the recipe for Dr. Pepper was created. It was created by Charles Alderton who sold it to carry out his passion. He claims if it wasn’t for Woodrow Wilson Clements determination it would have not gone very far.

I believe Green writes about this topic because he enjoys drinking Diet Dr. Pepper, and because of how popular the soft drink is. The drink is completely different from other soft drinks. Diet Dr. Pepper was able to accomplish something others weren’t, they were able to make their Diet Dr. Pepper taste like their regular Dr. Pepper which helped it become very successful.

I think this topic helps Green to find a life of significance because whenever he drinks Diet Dr. Pepper, it astonishes him with what humans can do. “Each time I drink Diet Dr. Pepper, I am newly astonished. Look at what humans can do! They can make ice-cold, sugary-sweet, zero-calorie soda that tastes like everything and also like nothing” (49). I think he feels that if you can keep working harder and trying new things out you can do good things.

As someone that likes Dr. Pepper and Diet Dr. Pepper, this chapter really grabbed my attention. I really like the taste of Dr. Pepper and how it is completely different from the other brands. I like how Green mentions the history of how Charles Alderton created the recipe and then sold it off to do other things in his life. I like how he talks about Woodrow Wilson Clements and how he helped the company grow so much because of his determination. The comparison he made with Diet/Dr. pepper and Diet/Coke and how Diet/Dr. pepper can taste the same and one is better for you than the other and how Diet/Coke tastes like two completely different drinks.
