If Beale Street could talk was a film that I saw a few years ago and I remembered liking it, but not loving it. This time after watching it I knew I loved it. This story is pretty mature and demands your attention. If you are willing to give your full attention you will be rewarded with a beautiful love story that makes you hopeful but heartbroken at the same time. Even though they don’t end up getting Fonny out of prison their love does not die. I loved that when Tish comes to visit fonny with their son they focus on each other and the time that they can spend together. But the scene is also so tragic because it is almost accepting that this kind of thing happens to black people and there is not anything we can do to change that. Now I know that’s not the message but it’s that fear that pushes us to keep fighting. I thought Regina King was phenomenal in this film, I loved it when she went to Puerto Rico to try and get Fonny Free. What a great strong character. I always love seeing Colman Domingo and Teyonah Parris in films/shows and they were great in this film as well. Overall, I think this is a beautiful film, but your attention is demanded which might turn away some viewers.
Glad you are able to appreciate more in your second viewing. I agree, it's a story that requires patience.
