NREM starts off with the inhibitor GABA. GABA slows down activation in the brain that shows up on the EEG. The activation goes to the thalamus which sets up the feedback with the neocortex. This leads to changes in the EEG and less alertness in us. The changes in neocortex leads to sleep spindles and K-Complexes on the EEG. As sleep progress from N1 to N2, then N3 the spindles disappear and Delta waves come .
