Week 2: Academic Writing as a Conversation
Academics always converse with one another, even if they do not do so in person. Ultimately, academic thinking and growth is about a respectful exchange of ideas. Think back to Coates's essay, and some of the themes in it that struck you as being significant. Next, look at Rodriguez's essay. How is the conversation sustained in this second essay? How does Rodriguez extend upon the argument created by Coates, even if the context is somewhat different? When you revisit Coates's essay, how would Rodriguez's perspective change your interpretation of it?
