BIE299-11 Global Perspective of Infectious Disease

Now that we have finished the first 3 chapters of the book, tell us which chapter was your favorite and why? In class, we have discussed some major topics in public health and disease. I will list a few below. Please discuss which topic has had the biggest impact on you. How has this topic changed the way you think or how you might act in the future? Do you see our world differently because of it- if so, how?

Topics:

1. Idea that most of our modern disease epidemics spillover from the animal kingdom into humans.

2. Idea that most of our modern disease epidemics are occurring as a result of human encroachment on the natural ecological boundaries of the animal kingdom.

3. Idea that mosquitoes/insects and microbes may actually be an inherent form of population control on Earth.

4. Idea that certain cultural practices can either stop or spread disease more effectively.

5. That microbes (bacteria, fungus, virus, parasites) evolve with a species over time and the longer the two are associated, the less likely it will be that the host organism will ultimately die as a result of infection.
