BI215-A: Principles of Genetics

In developed countries, such as the United States, childbearing later in life is a phenomenon which has become increasingly more common. It is known that pregnancy after the maternal age of 35 is considered to be medically “high risk.” Advanced maternal age (AMA) is seen by patients and healthcare professionals to be correlated with poorer outcomes. Infertility rates also increase as both sexes age.

In this forum, start by reviewing the risks associated with pregnancy in those of advanced maternal age. Explain the medical risks, for both the mother and the child, of pregnancy which are related to an aging reproductive system and an aging body.

Since we are studying genetics this semester and learning about DNA mutations and chromosomal abnormalities, list at least 3 genetic complications that are associated with pregnancy during advanced maternal age. Now explain any modern advancements in the area of genetic screening or infertility that are attempting to address these issues.

What are your personal beliefs about reproduction after the maternal age of 35? Would you consider it- why or why not? Why do you think our society is increasingly having to face this issue?
