BI215-A: Principles of Genetics

Yup, we all know the song. The one that only has to pop on the radio for 5 seconds and then you can't get it out of your head for the rest of the day! But, the great part is that the song "Truth Hurts" by Lizzo brings up the very modern notion of taking a DNA test. Have you ever wondered if you should pursue genetic testing of your DNA by one of the popular consumer genetics testing companies like 23 & me, Veritas or Genos? What could this type of a test tell you? How do they work? What kind of sample do they need from you? Do you believe the results (i.e. how accurate are these tests)?

Now, let's consider deeper questions. If you found out the "truth" about your genes, how might this affect how you live your life? Would you live differently if you knew you had a genetic mutation that typically results in a premature death? What about that valuable information you just signed over to the genetic testing company? Would it be ethical for the medical community to compile your DNA information for the "greater good" to try and discover cures for various human diseases? Would you want your health or life insurance company to know this information? After all, we are rapidly shifting our medical care approach to a personalized medicine platform.
