Forum 7: Chronic Pain
In this forum, I want to introduce you to the nociceptin/orphanin system that is located in both the Central (brain) and Peripheral nervous systems, where it controls the sensation of pain.
In our society we have a massive number of people living with chronic pain (defined as pain lasting over 3 months' time). When pain is chronic, it interferes with daily activities, careers, relationships, and results in further complications and disorders (mental health). Our societal problem has now reached epic levels where addiction to opioids and other painkillers is commonplace and even leads to death in the case of overdose or suicide.
I want you to begin by watching this Ted Ed talk by Joshua Pate called, "The mysterious science of pain." https://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-mysterious-science-of-pain-joshua-w-pate
Then, read this article on how nociceptin (also called orphanin FQ) is your brain's natural antidote to stress.

Finally, I want you to consider how nociceptive sensitivity is said to be genetically inherited. (Nociception is impossible to eliminate and from a survival standpoint, you would not want to eliminate it, because it is helpful for survival.)
Then, answer these questions in your thoughtful forum response:
1. Do you know someone who suffers from chronic pain (you don't have to share names, etc...)What type(s) of chronic pain?
2. Describe at least 3 unhealthy ways people in our society attempt to treat/deal with chronic pain.
3. List at least 3 healthy alternatives for chronic pain treatment.
4. What genes are being targeted for gene therapy in the brain amygdala?
5. What drugs might inhibit pain sensation in this part of the brain?
6. Finally, how do you think psychological factors influence pain perception in our society?
