Thesis Paragraph
Follow this very general (three sentence) outline:
1) Create an opening sentence that will capture a reader's attention (--could be a question).
2) Transition-sentence that opens toward a specific argument/thesis (--build a compelling path).
3) Present your thesis statement (including your position and indicate supporting evidence).
[Since this is an “argumentative paper,” begin the thesis statement (i.e., sentence 3) with:
“I will argue that [/ or against] ________, because/since ____” [= sentence 3)].
To write an effective thesis paragraph, you should first have a substantial amount of research and information about your topic.
Ask your classmates or friends to read your thesis statement and help you identify ways in which it could be stronger (and remember to follow 3) .[1]"
Annotated Bibliography
Each annotation should be a concise summary and/or an evaluation of the text.[2]
Here’s a sample Annotated Bibliography entry using the Chicago Style:
Davidson, Hilda Ellis. Roles of the Northern Goddess. London: Routledge, 1998.
Davidson's book provides a thorough examination of the major roles filled by the numerous pagan goddesses of Northern Europe in everyday life, including their roles in hunting, agriculture, domestic arts like weaving, the household, and death. The author discusses relevant archaeological evidence, patterns of symbol and ritual, and previous research. The book includes a number of black and white photographs of relevant artifacts.
If you are more comfortable with a different formal style guide (i.e., MLA or APA), then consistently follow the one with which you are most comfortable.
If I see problems with the Thesis-Annotated Bibliography, I’ll let you know on the forum.
