Why don't they just stop if they know the harm and consequences that coincide with the use of drugs?

I feel like sometimes in their heads it's not quite this simple, I remember in my episodes of intervention both of the subjects suffered from depression and anxiety so their drug consumption helped reduce those effects temporarily. So even though they acknowledged that it may be doing them bodily harm it was a way to relieve other burdens.

I agree with Michael. Even though they can see the negative effect these drugs have, they cant stop because its the only thing that puts them at ease. Also, once people start to go through the withdrawal effects they might not be able to handle it.
