Since I don’t really like the idea of my own house being haunted, I’m going to talk about the house my mom grew up in. Around 1878, Walter Fudge was born in South Carolina. Somehow he made his way to a small rural community in Alabama in the early 1900’s where he was the traveling doctor for the area. My great-grandparents ended up living next door to him and my grandfather was very close to him growing up. Dr. Fudge died in 1968 and the house was vacant for several years. In 1975, his daughter who had moved away, decided to sell the house to my grandfather because she knew Dr. Fudge would want him to live there. My mom has told me many stories about the idea of their house being haunted by Dr. Fudge. Any time they left for an extended trip, they would come home and the house would smell like medicine; they would turn off all the lights and they would come on during the night. In a century old house, the floors creaked and you knew who was walking through the house because the sound was unique to each person; there were times that the sound wasn’t any of the family members so they would just lay quietly and not investigate, letting Dr. Fudge walk around in his house. In old houses, every door has a screen door with a latch hook. The most convincing story was that on numerous occasions when they came home from vacation, ALL the screen doors were locked! Anyway, Dr. Fudge never harmed or tried to scare anyone in the family so he must have been more of protector. I guess if I was going to have an entity haunting my house, I would want it to be someone like Dr. Fudge.
