- Re: Story IdeasThere is so much to unpack about the Bush Hills and Ensley communities. Particularly white flight, red lining, etc. Giving tours of BSC I get a lot of questions about what it's like to be in a "dangerous" area but I think this often stems from misinformation and racism. I would be interested to see a story about how BSC partners with our community through volunteering at places like Bush Hills Academy and McCoy.

future featuresThanks for sharing all these great ideas. I look forward to seeing which you choose.
I hope you'll do the cheerleading story first. I had never thought of it as a sport, but I must admit that's because I had never thought of it at all. I mean, I have known cheerleaders and cheered along with them, but never *thought* about them. (Except in high school, when I thought several things that were not very nice. I had a thug's low-key scorn for all the cheerleaders except Mary and Kathleen. Mary was so loving that she was hard to hate. Kathleen was, I thought, too smart to be a cheerleader, and I silently resented her for being on the squad. I thought she was betraying smart girls by participating in what I thought was nonsense. As a grownup, I judge myself for being such a snob. What the hell do I care if Kathleen wants to cheer?) But back to my point. I think this story idea is great. What's the difference between a sport and a club? Who decides? Has it always been one or another? What do other colleges do? As I said to one of your classmates, probably better to compare ACS schools to ACS schools instead of ACS schools to big universities. Those stats might be interesting too, though.
Timely: Do the College Republicans exist? Do the College Democrats? What are they doing?
Evergreen: Turning right off campus. Sarah's comments are great. I get ENRAGED when I hear people say it's dangerous to turn right off campus. Enraged and sad, too. When I was a student, the Hilltop News had a regular feature that was called "Turning Right." Once a week, a student journalist would turn right and go somewhere and write about the experience. You or any of your classmates could take on that beat at least once.Post by Emma Clare Johnson
Re: Story IdeasVirtual Recruitment was something new for everyone. I would love to hear about the freshmen/upper classmens perspective on recruitment as well as actives perspectives.Post by William Moro
ReplyTurning right off campus is terrifying. I am not exactly how you would go about writing this story but you could possibly interview students and see if anyone has had dangerous encounters or something like that.Post by Lucas Lamb
Re: Story IdeasI never knew that cheerleading wasn't an "official" sport. I would love to hear what the coaches, cheerleaders, the athletic directors, and what other studetns think about that topic. As far as the "turning right off of campus" story, I've never had a bad experience turning right off of campus. I go for runs around legion field and into the civil rights district. I really don't see the reason for the fear of turning right.
Another story idea I found intriguing is the fraternity/sorority recruitment idea. Seeing as fraternity and sorority recruitment already differ on a regular year, I think you could talk to guys and girls who rushed and who were rushing.
I think all three of those topics you could find good sources and find different takes on each.
