Story Ideas

- Re: Story IdeasHey Preston! I think these are great. I am particularly interested in how covid has affected unemployment. I think if you want to narrow the topic down, it could be interesting to focus on its effect at BSC and interview students who are struggling to find means of income.

Re: Story IdeasHi Preston! These are good! I really like "Why can Division 1 conferences play football but BSC can't this season?" I think that would be a really good attraction especially for a BSC audience.Post by Lucas Lamb
Re: Story IdeasI think everyone would love to know more about the martial arts club. If it still exists, you might be able to find it on engage. I think since many students are going in and out of quarantine, you'd have no shortage of people to interview about their experience and what hobbies they picked up. I've also never heard of the Race, Power, and Privelige E-Course. I think it'd be fairly easy to find the professor and students who are taking that course. I think the hobbies during quarantine and the E-Course idea may be the easiest to find interesting sources for.Post by Glenny Brock
future featuresYou have several interesting story ideas here. It's a great position to be in to have so many choices! My first vote is for the "Race, Power and Privilege" e-course. Are you doing the course? If so, you could include some first-person reflection. Whether or not you are doing it, you have a lot of strong possibilities for folks to interview -- those who designed it and those who are completing it.
Next, I *might* vote for Jack Taylor. Is he a BSC professor? Is there a news hook for writing a profile of him right now? Are there particular reasons you admire him? When you are writing a profile, you may find it helpful to approach it with a frame. For instance, you could write about Taylor's daily routine, the bookshelves in his office, the books he is reading right now. Please remind me to discuss this in class. I'll make reference to profiles in NEW SCIENTIST magazine.
The Division 1 story is interesting too, but how much is there? That is, if there's a simple answer to the question, how do you get to 800 words?
A hobby story would be good -- that's evergreen.
I like that the unemployment story shows you're thinking about big issues, but I fear the topic is too broad. I like Sophie's idea that you narrow the focus to BSC students. The first big task would be figuring out where you could get meaningful stats about how many students work.
