Jan 9th Reflection

I am interested to see how the Community Care Development Network works with people in the community to provide them with resources. I know that there are many organizations out there to help those that need it, but I am interested to see how many people actually use these resources. With that being said specifically which demographic of people lean towards using the services that CCDM provides.

When thinking about the actual internship, I am interested to see if I actually enjoy or can see myself doing something like this in the near future. I am considering a career in social work, but am still unsure about it because people always have something to say about it and how underpaid a career it is. This is something that stays in the back of my head when thinking about possible careers, but at the end of the day I tell myself money isn’t everything. I want to find something that I love to do and I hope that this internship will help make it clear for me.

With that being said,  I am a bit nervous about using the software to update patient information because when you first look at it, it's very overwhelming. Many names and information all in one place, but I think the more I familiarize myself with how it works and the location of everything then I will be less nervous. I just don’t want to mess anything up, but we were given guides and explained how to work everything.

I am hoping that by the end of the internship I will learn more in general about the process of how helping others looks like within organizations such as the Community Care Development Network. Such as what all is needed from these clients for them to receive the services. With partaking in this opportunity, I wish to expand my use of the Spanish language because when talking to our supervisor the other day, she mentioned that they have clients whose primary language is Spanish, and so me being a native speaker I am given the opportunity to put what I’ve learned to use. I want to put me knowing Spanish to good use, so I am excited to interact with these clients. I also want to get to know our supervisor, Tamika Holmes, better and learn from her. She has had many years of experience in this line on work, and anything that I am able to learn from her could be beneficial.

I like how you stress the fact that 'money is not everything'. I feel like this should be emphasized more often in today's generation because they are so many people unhappily seated in their 9am to 5pm jobs because they pay well. At the end of the day, when it's already too late, is when they realize that they have wasted majority of the most important years of their lives. I think it is important for people to go for the careers they love and enjoy and not necessarily for the money because then they will be able to pour their heart's and soul's in whatever they do.

I think focusing on getting people resources is amazing right now. Life is chaotic for even the most well off right now, so focusing on just providing resources and information to communities is noble in and of itself. What made you decide this was something you wanted to devote you Jan term to?

It looks like you and I have very similar feelings going into our CCDN internships. I am also very nervous about navigating the database, as I am not all that tech-savy. Let's make sure to reach out to each other if we ever feel overwhelmed. Also, your fluency in Spanish is going to be such an asset to you in the future! Speaking a second language will really give you a leg up in grad school applications and employment opportunities. You could also consider a career in therapy or counseling, as Spanish speakers are very needed in those fields as well!

I love the fact that you were doing this internship to see if it is something you want to do in the future. Social work is an admirable career, but it’s also a very difficult one, so learning to see if you love it is extremely important. It can also be difficult to learn new software’s, but I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it! I can’t wait to hear more about your internship and the different communities that CCN works with.

I wonder if you and the other CCDN interns could set up a virtual lunch with Tamika? You could ask about her background, career path, advice she has for people who want to do community work, challenges she faces, etc. You could also ask her to help connect you to some social workers for informational interviews so you can learn more about the field. *If any of you want information on how to have a successful informational interview, just ask and we can talk or I'll send you resources!
