Beloved is a forward thinking community based church located in the middle of Avondale's entertainment strip. They focus on creating an inclusive environment for minorities, people experiencing homelessness, and the LGBTQ+ community. This project will focus on the practices of redlining and gentrification as they apply to the community of Avondale. The ultimate goal is to plan how the church can embody community togetherness and cooperation as well as survive the increasing pressure to be bought out. This is important because the physical location allows for many low income neighborhoods are being redeveloped disturbing multiple minority communities.

I think it's interesting that the church is taking a step to be all inclusive, including of the LGBTQ+ community because I've heard so many stories about people in the LGBTQ+ community who had to leave the church because it was the only place that did not accept them. Also, I think it's important that the church is already planning on how to incorporate togetherness in the gentrified community because gentrification really does harm minorities in some way.

What do you find interesting? What questions do you have?

I find it really interesting how churches in the past haven't been inclusive to the          minority and LGBTQ+ Community. I grew up in a church were everyone was accepted, so i never realized how un-inclusive some churches were. I am glad that you will be able to help your organization change this as well as help with the redlining and gentrification problems.

do you have any specific thoughts on how to keep gentrified areas from pushing out the low-income residents?

Your project is so interesting to me. The businesses moving into Avondale have gotten a lot of press and accolades, but there's another side to the development too, as you mention, and that presents ethical challenges for individuals and organizations like Beloved. I would love to read your research and recommendations!
