Reflection

I am both nervous and excited about starting my internship. Especially, because when doing social media, I am so used to it being in person. Since the facility is closed because they work with at-risk adults, I won’t be able to be emersed and present. Luckily, I was able to work hands-on with McCoy last year, so I can use that experience to help me make posts, and answer questions from donors. That’s one of the setbacks that I believe will be harder than usual. On the other hand, I am excited, because this internship will help prepare me for future jobs. I am most excited about making good content, so that McCoy will continue to thrive on donations as well as being able to still help their clients while they are at home. One of the things that I really want to learn, is how to make posts that really grab the audience’s attention. I think that important because you want people to relate to the message you want to get across. I also want to be able to develop my communication skills over the phone, and to be able to talk to people more comfortably. I also hope to learn how to perfect my time management skills, so that I don’t overwork myself. By the end of this month, I hope I’ll be able to make clear, precise content.

Aliya, I totally understand feeling both emotions there. Not being present in my internship is slightly nerve-racking as well! I'm so glad you were able to experience McCoy in person before hand though!

In the internship with Highlands UMC, I am also working with social media and am wanting to learn those skills as well. I think your goals and skills go together super well and I'm excited to see what you'll create!

I also think having the internship online will create a lot of struggles, but I have been fortunate enough to have been previously working witht the group I am interning with, this should reduce the burden of the online atmosphere.

Your goals sound great and obtainable! I relate to wanting to work on time management too! Your internship sounds so interesting and important. I am curious on how you will be able to create content without having people in the actual space, but that will be extremely impressive! Remember that when people say no to donating, they’re saying no to the donation— not you! That’s the best piece of advice I have been given for solicitations of any sort!! You’re going to do amazingly and the people that enjoy McCoy appreciate you so much!!!

Regarding the practical skills you want to learn about social media and fundraising, can you look for some online trainings, webinars, YouTube videos? You might check out the following books:

"The 11 Questions Every Donor Asks And the Answers All Donors Crave" by Harvey McKinnon

"How to Write Fundraising Material That Raise More Money" by Tom Ahern

I have both books in my office if you'd like to borrow them.

Can you share a bit on how McCoy is still serving their clients even though they are at home and can't come to the center?
