Reflection- Katherine

I’m very excited about this internship because it involves research that I’m enthusiastic about and information that could be incredibly helpful for children right here in Birmingham. To know that this research might increase resources for special needs children or children that are struggling with learning development is beyond exciting. I’m the most nervous about working remotely and being able to accurately summarize the vast amount of research I will be doing. I think my psychology background and connections to special needs organizations such as the Exceptional Foundation where I have volunteered before will be very useful in my internship. Hopefully studying the resources available from the city school system will be beneficial in my own life someday when I have children that will need schooling. Many parents don’t have the time or energy to research the ins and outs of the school system and what programs/resources will be helpful for them. My biggest goal for this month is to get a feel for working for a business before I graduate. My summers have always consisted of soccer camp counseling so this is a great opportunity to give me a taste of what an office job might be like.

Katherine, I love your perspective on your internship about how it will benefit you as a parent and the children in the school. Your research sounds extremely interesting and important.

As someone who is passionate about the inequities incorporated into the US education system, I connect with your reflection. Everyone seems to be able to agree that a proper education is the key to success, but people are so quick to want to limit the access to this key. I am excited to keep up with your journey on this internship, as Birmingham has one of the largest divides in quality education that I have seen before. Have you considered writing a letter to the State Superintendent in Montgomery addressing these issues once your internship is coming to an end?

Laura Alice, with your interest in education you should definitely talk with Katherine, Julie, and Rachel about their work throughout the month. I could even see a tie between Katherine and Julie's work at CCDN and Mary's internship - how does gentrification affect the local school?

How can you get a real feel for working for a business even though you're working remotely? Have you been able to talk to your supervisor about that goal and how you might accomplish it? Perhaps you could join with other CCDN interns to take advantage of some opportunities beyond your remote research.
