Reflection 3

I am enjoying the flexibility that comes with working remotely, but at the same time I am very much missing the aspect of collaboration that comes with an in-person or group work environment. I have found through the pandemic that I gain so much energy from talking to new people and learning about others that are not in my tight group of friends. One of the hardest aspects of this remote environment, combined with a slightly vague research prompt, has been finding motivation to do my research. While the flexibility has been great for navigating soccer practice and other personal commitments, it has revealed to me a weakness in my personality/tendencies that may have gotten stronger over the years of being an athlete. I crave structure and am much more likely to do achieve goals when others are holding me accountable than when I’m left alone. This has been something that I’ve worked very hard on during this internship. I’ve found that I’m decently good at analyzing organizations and the resources that they offer and identifying strengths and weaknesses in programs. This might have to do with my psychology and business background. For the rest of the time being I plan to wake up earlier so that I don’t delay work into the evening and weekends. I also plan to reach out more to my supervisor. This is something I’ve been nervous about because she’s such a busy individual and I don’t want to be a burden to her. But I believe I’ll be able to do my best work for CCDN if I stay in closer contact with my supervisor near the end of the month.

One of the things that I also have in common is your plan to start waking up earlier, this past week I had found myself struggling with finishing some of my projects over the weekend as well. I also have found it hard to have motivation doing my internship remotely so you aren’t alone. My one question is what do you hope to get out of your internship by the end of the month?

It is tough to keep up motivation, especially when working remotely. Even working in the office, it is sometimes hard to maintain momentum when you're working on a project that is self-directed. I encourage you to treat the internship like an in-person job and work a set schedule everyday. Not only will that keep your evenings and weekends free, but may also help you with focus and motivation because you know you'll need to get X amount done by the end of the day. (That said, I am commenting on your posts at 10:00 at night, so...)
