1. The theme of xenia (hospitality / gift exchange is omnipresent in Homer. Give some examples of this concept from the reading Does xenia work the same way for gods and humans?
2. Poets, singers, public speakers, and storytellers play an outsized role in the Homeric epics. Achilles, known as the best fighter, actually spends most of the poem in his hut singing songs with his boyfriend Patroklus. Choose a couple of scenes from the Iliad discuss the role of song and/or speech making. Why do the men tell stories/ sing songs? Who listens to them? Why is it important that Homeric heroes be doers of deeds AND speakers of words?
