Each student should have a unique disease or disorder they would like to investigate for their literature review article. Please be specific (type I or type II diabetes, not just "diabetes"). Once students have decided what to study, they will post their disease/disorder selection here and a brief reason why they have chosen this topic. Please make your selection by 8/31/2020.

My mom is currently dealing with this illness and I want to learn more about it.
I am choosing this disease because it is something that runs in my family, with both my mom and grandfather having pretty bad cases. Watching them live with this disease had made me curious to learn more about it and how it works.
During my internship, I was really drawn to gastroenterology which involves seeing patients with pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer disrupts the metabolic pathways making it an interesting topic to research that also parallels the ideas we learn in biochem.
I would like to study Sickle Cell Anemia for my Literature Review, because I want to learn more about this topic since it is one of the most common inheritable blood disorders. I also thought it was interesting that there is unequal prevalence across racial/ethnic backgrounds.
I have chosen auto-brewery syndrome as my disease. This is a rare disease that causes people to become intoxicated after eating carbs. I chose this disease because it is very unique and I think the biochemistry behind it could be interesting.
I have chosen to study Alzheimers disease as I have seen the effects it can have firsthand. I also am intrigued by the wide variety of sometimes seemingly unpredictable affects it can have on peoples' personality and/or actions.
I have chosen to study and write about macular degeneration. This disease is interesting to me as I hope to become an optometrist one day. I believe it is important to research this eye disease because it is hard to treat and needs to be caught in its early stages in order to prevent major vision loss.
I have chosen to study HSV-1 because it is an incredibly widespread disease and many people may not even know they have this disease. It is a very relevant topic in the US and is worth studying because learning more about this disease may allow people to understand how to avoid becoming infected or how to manage herpes type 1.
