Discussion: Formative and Summative Assessment (15 mins)
Deadline: March 1, 2020 at 11:59 pm
Prompt: Watch the video below and answer one of the questions below:
- Give an example of a formative and summative assessment that you will use in your online course.
- Describe an instance when you used data from an assessment (formative or summative) to make a decision.
Requirements: Minimum 50 words. Respond to at least one of your colleagues.
Quality Example: Using Data to Make Instructional Decisions- Gay Barnes
My students are often so focused on the grade they
receive on assignments that they pay little attention to the descriptive
feedback I give them. For lesson planning assignments, I’ve adopted the practice of giving feedback on the plan based on the grading rubric but WITHOUT
a numeric grade. Students then have the opportunity to revise their plans based
on the feedback, I’ve given and then I assign a grade.

Summative: Exams, not much to say hear we all know how exams are.
An assignment that we have in our WR course requires students to break down and understand a scientific publication by rewriting it for a general, non-science audience. Because the assignment has the students interpret and translate the paper into nontechnical writing, there is always a temptation to plagiarize the original paper by using too many phrases that they don't understand, but just sound fancy. When I noticed too many students were having this issue, I attributed it to students not understanding how to paraphrase, so we developed an assignment that walked them through the process of paraphrasing and allowed more formative assessment prior to the final paper being written.
An example of a formative assessment I can use in an online course is homework assignments where design is implemented using online simulation tools. The tools will simulate engineering principles implemented to test a hypothesis.
An example of a summative assessment I can use in an online course is online simulation tools as well. I will reverse the idea of testing by proving beforehand an empirical project that is real-world and have the student to simulate the project and come up with the answer that has been proven already to test their understanding.
- In my CAC 190 course, I will assign regular programming assignments (for the online course, these will be daily assignments). For formative assessment, I will review the students' submissions, and provide feedback on what was done well and where their coding or logic could be improved. As summative assessment, they will be given a pre-, mid-, and final exam.
- I use informal formative assessment on a regular basis. I use a lot of active learning where students either write code on the computer or complete a group worksheet in every class meeting. I provide feedback to the students as they are working on these activities, and I determine the level at which students understand the material being taught and then use that to decide if I want to move on to the next topic in the next class meeting. For example, in my CAC 310 course, the students struggled with an activity on Wednesday; therefore, Monday, I will stay where we are before moving on to the next topic on Wednesday.
