Formative and Summative Assessment

I'm considering using discussion post activities and perhaps some short quizzes to provide assessment and feedback opportunities.  The summative assessments include short essays and a final writing and research project. Each student will land on a subject of their choice to interview and create a leadership study based on their choice. I'm deliberating on whether to require a brief student presentation of their study. If so, i will likely break the class into smaller groups for those presentations.

Formative Critiques

Students will submit multiple sketches of designs in a forum. The forum will serve as an in-progress critique, requiring comments and discussion from all students.  My responses will address individual work as it relates to the project's criteria.  Students then have the opportunity to respond to the feedback in their final designs.  The assessment takes into account how the student reflects on and responds to the in-progress critique in the final design.

Formative and Summative

Formative: I use 2-3 question Moodle Quizzes we call WarmUps. They are to be done after the reading for the upcoming class and they are due the evening before the class. The questions are usually a blend of an explanation, a computation, and multiple choice. It shows us where the understanding of each student is so we can focus on misunderstandings from the readings.

Summative: Exams, not much to say hear we all know how exams are.

As I move RE 205 online for the summer of 2020, I am aware that I will be doing more in a shorter period of time and online.  I think formative quizzes might be a good step to reinforce some of the material, much as we do in these modules.  Some quizzes that are embedded in the assignments means that students have immediate feedback about their comprehension of basic concepts, which will be especially important in an online class in which I am not physically present to orally correct misunderstandings.  I don't yet know if those quizzes will be graded or not. And I don't know how to do embed a quiz!  So there is some technological skill I need to acquire.

Research paper feedback

As my course is a senior capstone research course, the final product will be a research paper in scientific format. There are several assignments along the way that allow them to submit drafts of the different sections of the final paper (introduction, materials & methods, results, etc.). I plan on giving them formative assessment (lots of comments) that are designed to help them improve their writing and also get them producing components of the final product.

An assignment that we have in our WR course requires students to break down and understand a scientific publication by rewriting it for a general, non-science audience. Because the assignment has the students interpret and translate the paper into nontechnical writing, there is always a temptation to plagiarize the original paper by using too many phrases that they don't understand, but just sound fancy. When I noticed too many students were having this issue, I attributed it to students not understanding how to paraphrase, so we developed an assignment that walked them through the process of paraphrasing and allowed more formative assessment prior to the final paper being written.

their will be reading quizzes with immediate feedback. There will also be discussion posts that will address key topics throughout the semester. As far as  summative, there will be exams but more importantly, there will be an APA paper that will be a way for them to demonstrate their understanding of some of the theories of psychology.

Students provide a summarized blog posts that incorporate the theoretical aspects of the readings with their own personal analysis of the film. During this time, the blog will be the method which to evaluate the student's review and application of the material in a concise, articulate paper, where I'll provide feedback on the students analysis. The final paper will be the summation of all of the work, reflective of the changes, previously given notes,  and learned modes of analytics throughout the course.

Quizzes with multiple attempts

I think that as formative assessment, I will include multiple quizzes within each module. The students will see their incorrect responses immediately and the quizzes will allow multiple attempts so that students are getting feedback on their answers and getting the chance to learn from their mistakes.  Students can begin the next topic when they have earned at least 80% on a quiz. I will also have larger-scale online quizzes/exams at the end of each module for summative assessment.

A formative assessment I will use is online homework. This allows a student to immediately see if their answer is correct. They way that I have it set up, the student can retry the material. You can set it up so that there is only one try but then it becomes much more summative and less formative. This is particularly important in online courses. In an in person class, I might use informal ungraded (In the sense that no score is provided. Answers and feedback are still provided.) problem sets and group discussions as formative assessment. In an asynchronous delivery, I cannot give immediate feedback. The computer can. I also plan to have the standard, one bite at the apple, test as summative. Except for the final this is still somewhat formative, in this class. This is true since  most math classes build one module on the other. Reviewing and improving your work is necessary for the next module. The difficulty is in getting students to view it this way. They often look at the grade and are done.

I usually begin the semester with a short diagnostic essay of fewer than 1,000 words that assesses the student's writing and critical thinking skills as well as basic knowledge of the course material.  We revisit the essay later in the semester, and I will pull from the student diagnostic essays to guide class discussions.  I also provide feedback on short-answer quizzes.

Reading Summaries and Reading Guides

This summer I will be teaching an introduction to music course. While I can provide video lectures and readings, the bigger question is often if they are doing the readings, do they know what to look for, do they know basic facts, and then can they ultimately use this information critically to inform their understanding of music, music history, and their musical experiences as an audience member. I find that assessment in the form of reading guides and summaries are good at directing students to these areas and help me to model the expectations to the students and to see if students are assembling the skills they need.

When teaching writing reinforcement classes, I have students write "twitter theses." That is, they have to create a thesis in 240 characters or less. Their thesis also has to include various elements of a "good" thesis that we have already discussed in class. I don't grade their first attempt. Instead, I make comments on their first attempt, have them revise--taking into consideration my comments--and then I give them a grade based on their revisions.

Question 1 response

An example of a formative assessment I can use in an online course is homework assignments where design is implemented using online simulation tools. The tools will simulate engineering principles implemented to test a hypothesis.

An example of a summative assessment I can use in an online course is online simulation tools as well. I will reverse the idea of testing by proving beforehand an empirical project that is real-world and have the student to simulate the project and come up with the answer that has been proven already to test their understanding.

Formative Assessment in CS

  1. In my CAC 190 course, I will assign regular programming assignments (for the online course, these will be daily assignments). For formative assessment, I will review the students' submissions, and provide feedback on what was done well and where their coding or logic could be improved. As summative assessment, they will be given a pre-, mid-, and final exam.
  2. I use informal formative assessment on a regular basis. I use a lot of active learning where students either write code on the computer or complete a group worksheet in every class meeting. I provide feedback to the students as they are working on these activities, and I determine the level at which students understand the material being taught and then use that to decide if I want to move on to the next topic in the next class meeting. For example, in my CAC 310 course, the students struggled with an activity on Wednesday; therefore, Monday, I will stay where we are before moving on to the next topic on Wednesday.
