Providing Multiple Means of Action & Expression ( 8 minutes)

The third UDL Guideline, Providing Multiple Means of Action and Expression, is all about giving students options for demonstrating their knowledge. Specifically, UDL directs us to provided options in three areas:

1. Provide options for Physical Action

  • Vary the methods for response and navigation
  • Optimize access to tools and assistive technologies

2. Provide options for Expression & Communication

  • Use multiple media for communication
  • Use multiple tools for construction and composition
  • Build fluencies with graduated levels of support for practice and performance

3. Provide options for Executive Functions

  • Guide appropriate goal-setting
  • Support planning and strategy development
  • Facilitate managing information and resources
  • Enhance capacity for monitoring progress

The video below from Oakland University provides concrete strategies for applying UDL guidelines student action and expression.
