It's pretty clear that an assessment at the end of the unit is an assessment of learning, but a common point of confusion is the difference between assessment and learning activities. This confusion may be due to the fact that a learning activity can also be a form of assessment.
A learning activity could be used as a formative assessment if students are provided with meaningful feedback. The feedback makes the learning activity an assessment for learning. A background knowledge probe or pre-test is another example of assessment for learning.
We have discussed assessment of learning and assessment for learning, but there is also assessment as learning. Self-assessment and self-reflection are examples of assessment as learning.
Let's Review
Assessment of learning is usually summative, assessment for learning is usually formative, and the two can sometimes overlap. Assessment as learning is just another name to describe a metacognitive process: students thinking about their thinking. This can occur through self-assessments or reflective papers.
