EH 102 Advice

First Set

1. Title- have one. Make sure it does some work. Choose a good one

2. Topic- is your general question/ issue/ concern and so on- Set your topic context early and quickly.

3. Thesis- the real issue on which you focus. What is the conversation, especially what is your side in it? Use key logic terms and ideas: “Even Though,” “For Example,” “However,” “If,” “On the other hand,” and so many more.

**** after for first few paragraphs, I should be able to know where the rest of your paper is going.

4. Texture- first, the interaction of your ideas and concerns with others in the conversation. How do you use their ideas and words to become part of your paper that reflects your research but is still YOUR paper? Second- when to quote directly, when to paraphrase. Third, sentence length and sentence complexity; put general ideas in strong short sentences early in paragraphs; use longer sentences for details and examples. Fourth, emphasize good strong verbs and clarity of action and responsibility.

5. Introduce quotations and use the full name of experts when you first mention them. Do not use “Honorific” titles- like Doctor or such. Be sure to set off longer quotations.

6. Generally, do not summarize your paragraph in your last sentence of that paragraph—unless you have an especially long and complex paragraph.

7. Transition- use logic words and phrases to show logical sequence. “Another” is not a good logic word. Think of things like “therefore,” “and so,” “as a consequence,” “then,” “however,” “even though.”

Conclusion- it should reflect your logic and evidence. It should not merely restate your opening paragraph- Make sure you use evidence to develop ideas in your paper so that you can reach a real, logical conclusion
