Write a three to four (3-4) page essay about your interest in meditation or contemplative practices. If relevant, please include examples of specific experiences, people, conversations, and/or texts (articles, books, films, etc.) that have sparked some sense of curiosity about these traditions and practices. If there are particular ideas, issues, people, or traditions that you are especially curious about or that you have been exposed to please include those. In addition to the above, also include the following:

What is or might be your plan for a meditation or contemplative practice over the semester? What are your goals? How many times a day/week do you plan to practice? How many minutes per session?

What practice or practices do you plan to try?

What, if anything, do you hope to gain or learn from your practice?

Finally, reflect on the film The Dhamma Brothers. Why do you think the vipassana practice was transformative for some of the inmates who participated?

You do not need to answer these in sequence (although you can!) If you prefer, you may write an essay that incorporates these answers in a narrative fashion or uses some other organizational layout. For this essay, the most important element is thoughtfulness.

If you use quotes from a book or article (unnecessary for this essay), please give the author’s last name and page number in the body of the essay, e.g., (Hanh, 75) and include a bibliography.

Format Details

Type the paper using double space and a 12-point font. I prefer to use Times New Roman for my work. Check your spelling and your grammar and remember, if you take your paper to the BSC Writing Center and I am notified by the Writing Center, I will add two points to your essay grade.
